Brief Introduction
I am Karla Nwaeke (aka KarlaGod), and I’m the lead Partner at B<>rder/ess - a Public Good that raises the next generation of web3 developers, contributors and builders from today’s universities.
We applied to run a community round during GG23 to fund Web3 Education and Onboarding activities carried out by;
- University Web3 Tech Clubs
- Projects and
- Individuals
which have educating and onboarding students in African Universities as their community priority or focus.
We also used this round to fund dev tools built by developers from the B<>rder/ess Cipher Sessions.
About the Round
The Web3 for Universities Community Round has successfully concluded its application phase, marking a significant milestone in our mission to advance blockchain education and innovation within African universities. We received a diverse array of applications, reflecting the growing enthusiasm and engagement in the Web3 ecosystem among students and educators.

WHAT WE EXPECTED

We expected 50 Grantees for this round and at least 80 Applications; below is the application overview.

The applications encompassed a variety of initiatives and individuals dedicated to consistent Web3 education and onboarding activities in the African Universities.

University Tech Clubs: 12
12 web3 Tech clubs within African Universities focused on blockchain education, workshops, and community building were accepted into the round, some examples are, W3zetech, Blockchain Lautech, Blockchain UNN, B<>rder/ess Web3 Product House University of Nigeria and a lot others. -
Development Tools/Projects & Developer Contributions: 15
These were DevTools, Projects and developers, that were impacting the education and onboarding of Student Developers, web3 Contributors and Builders from the African University Communities. They did this through the creation of tools, resources, Developer workshops, and more to aid blockchain development and education for students in the African Universities. Some examples are Beta UI, Byte Onchain, Metering Protocol, Ebubechi Anyanwu, and a lot more others. -
Individual Contributors, Web3 Tech Club Admins, Other Projects aimed at Educating and onboarding Developers and Web3 Contributors: 23
These were students/educators undertaking personal projects who had projects in line with the Round funding focus and had consistently contributed to the success of B<>rder/ess activities in the Public Goods ecosystem.
Selection Criteria:
The evaluation process was rigorous, focusing on the following key aspects:
- Alignment with Round Objectives: Projects that closely align with our mission to enhance blockchain education and innovation within African universities.
- Impact Potential: Initiatives demonstrating the ability to significantly contribute to the Web3 ecosystem and effectively onboard students.
- Feasibility and Sustainability: Projects with clear, achievable goals and plans for long-term sustainability.
- Community Engagement: Applicants with a proven track record of active participation and contribution to their respective communities.
