Joel here, some of you may remember me as one of the designers of COCM / cluster matching.
As we move into a more multi-mechanism world at Gitcoin and elsewhere, I want to make sure that I can provide as much support as possible for folks interested in using COCM. I know it’s a bit more complicated to work with than standard QF, so I want to reduce barriers to entry as much as possible.
To that end – if your organization / round wants to use COCM and has questions about how it works / if it’s the right fit for you / where the most recent code is, etc, please reach out and I’ll try my best to help you! My email is joeldmiller73 ~at~ gmail ~dot~ com, that’s the best place to reach me.
I’m interested in providing as much support as I can for free.
Lastly – I’m really interested in exploring whether or not COCM is useful for smaller-scale decision making (i.e. voting within a DAO). I don’t want to get into the details here, but just know that there’s good reason to believe that smaller-scale decision making could allow for some nifty improvements to COCM. So, if you’re a DAO or other org interested in piloting a COCM-like process for decision making, please reach out!
Sure! For a while, Gitcoin was using QF to give away money. COCM is a different way of giving away money. It’s like QF, but with some changes.
The main difference is that it’s a bit easier for big groups of coordinated people to impact the results of a round that uses QF. In contrast, COCM tries to reward projects that are liked by groups of diverse, un-coordinated people.
So, some people think that COCM is more “fair” / more reflective of overall community sentiment, compared to QF. But COCM also has disadvantages. For one, it can only guess at who’s coordinated and who’s not in a messy, imperfect way. Also, sometimes it’s good to let big groups of coordinated people change the outcome (like how QF does).
So both algorithms are useful in different scenarios.
COCM is a huge contribution to the space and I am really really pleased with the results we’ve had using it in Giveth QF rounds, when compared to regular vanilla QF.
I feel like it is so genius yet so underrated. I am a major fan.
Thanks so much for all your work on it @Joel_m and the offer to support others!!
