Bioregional Reforestation Round

Gm Gitcoin community!

Djimo here, founder at Silvi - wanted to share the first update for the Bioregional Reforestation Round, announced here and here, now half way through the matching phase ahead of the impact phase during Q1 and Q2 of 2026.

Round tldr:

$100k seeds nine bioregional smart pools via QF allocation and then distributes funding from pools to stewards/orgs in those bioregions for verified tree plantings. We’re hosting an orientation on 12/09. Join us!

Round inspiration and formation:

For those of you who are not familiar with the developments of the round - along with the Climate Coordination Network, Silvi is operating a Bioregional Reforestation Round through mid 2026. This round was motivated by the advances in bioregionalism and localism, and builds on the 2024 BioFi round by the BioFi Project. The vision for this work is captured well in the dialogue between Kevin Owocki and Matthew Monahan in the “Building Protopia at Gitcoin” pod by Ma Earth filmed a year ago in Devcon.

This round was first proposed in response to the Ethereum Localism x Regen Coordination Sensemaking report by Monty Merlin and references a proposal deck worked on and circulated since July. BioFi also hosted a community call to announce the round outside of Gitcoin forums. The round proposes leveraging the Silvi protocol tech stack to configure regional smart escrows (bioregions) that release payouts to local organizations/stewards based on verified outcomes - in this case, verified native tree plantings.

It was my impression that this round would be too small / too niche to apply during the sense making earlier this year. However, the size and scale became more applicable as GG24 evolved into Dedicated Domain Allocators (DDA) and therefore the Bioregional Reforestation Campaigns made sense as a round within the Targeted Development & Adoption DDA. Upon securing the first $5,000 from BioFi Project, and in light of earlier discussions, Jon Ruth and the team at Climate Coordination Network expressed interest in supporting the round fiscally with $35,000 and logistically as a co-operator. Building on this momentum, Ma Earth, CeloPG and Gitcoin contributed additional funding on funding to bring the round’s deployable funding to $95,000 after 11.6% in operator fees. We are still looking to raise a bit more to get us through the $100k matching amount.

Eight bioregions were selected based on the BioFi Cultivator organization readiness, synergies with ethereum localism initiatives, and traction from Silvi’s previous regranting efforts. A ninth geography (global) will also receive matching funds for projects outside of the bioregions but interested in participating in a global campaign.

Round mechanisms and timelines:

The timelines and corresponding mechanism for the funding distribution is two-fold.

Phase 1 (matching allocation). This is a quadratic funding period where we’re relying on the community to decide how the $100k is distributed across the bioregions. What is particularly interesting about this model is the game theory behind funding geographies. For one, the more participants in a bioregion, the easier it is to increase the matching, but the more competition there will be during the impact period. We’re seeing healthy collaboration and coordination around this. Secondly, this is the first time to our knowledge that QF is not directly funding individuals or organization. This first step is to fund geographies. Interested participants can influence available funding, but still need to produce the impact to receive it directly.

Phase 2 (impact funding). This will run for 6 months during H1 2026. On a first-come first-served basis, organizations and individuals will unlock the funding from the bioregional fund via verifiable impact. This can be understood as a plant-to-earn mechanism i.e with bounties for verified tree plantings and tree survival. Payments will be split based on the milestones (planting, survival) as well as stakeholders (verifier, implementing partner). We believe that bioregions still require top-down coordination and onboarding, so we are working closely with organizations to also play the role as implementing partners. We’re geofencing implementing partners to specific zones within those bioregions, and we’re splitting a percentage of the tree bounty towards the implementing partners.

We’re excited to experiment with this model as an open and permissionless approach to coordinating planetary restoration. We admit that while bioregionalism offers a starting point as geographic container, this model could become even more effective when tree bounties and associated pricing is dynamic and optimized for high-priority zones like critical biodiversity hotspots and corridors as well as high-leverage ecosystems/agriculture systems. We believe this type of mechanism could become especially relevant for globally-coordinated funding commitment ties to national/international targets. Ex, the 9 countries surrounding the Amazon forest, raising and international fund to restore the Amazon. Ex, Brazil launching a subsidy for transitioning grazing land to agroforestry systems. The possibilities are endless!

Miscellaneous updates:

EN0VA launched a hyperstition market for this round (a prediction market on whether the round can raise $25,000 by 12/15) We find this incredibly exciting and a creative interplay between Degen x Regen.

GoodDollar has committed $4,000 in G$ to a GoodCollective pool of conservation basic income that will support this round - a smart wallet integration incorporated into Silvi’s MRV stack to compound an additional $0.5 equivalent per tree planted in the global south.

Financial transparency:

The matching amount has yet to be deposited from the DDA into the Bioregional Reforestation Round’s Celo Safe:

Request to Gitcoin:

Due to the fragmentation of the rounds and relatively limited exposure by Silvi, we’d like to request a dedicated email blast/newsletter from Gitcoin to its community pointing to the QF portal

Happy to answer any questions to share the findings of this round in public. We’ll share another update with the results of the QF and additional progress early next year.

Happy holidays from Silvi and CCN
